El Niño and Infectious Disease Risks: Connecting Community Insights with Laboratory Evidence
WHO and Tsinghua University are rolling out BRIDGE, AI-supported tools for analysing community concerns and information needs during health emergencies. In a recent workshop, participants tested these tools through a simulated Super El Niño scenario involving rising dengue-like illness across several countries.
The exercise highlights a broader public health challenge: how can health systems turn emerging signals into informed action?
· Mosquito-borne infections
Changes in temperature and rainfall can affect the breeding and distribution of mosquitoes, which transmit dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, and Anopheles mosquitoes, which transmit malaria. Warmer conditions within suitable ranges may also accelerate pathogen development in mosquitoes, potentially altering transmission patterns and seasonality.
· Waterborne, enteric, and zoonotic infections
Flooding can contaminate drinking water with sewage, while drought can limit access to safe water and sanitation, increasing exposure to pathogens such as Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella, and norovirus. Contact with floodwater contaminated by infected animal urine can also increase leptospirosis risk.
· Respiratory health and infection risks
Wildfire smoke can affect respiratory health, while displacement, crowded shelters, and disrupted health services can complicate the control of infections such as influenza and RSV.
The impact is not uniform: local ecology, infrastructure, population vulnerability, and public health capacity determine how these hazards translate into disease risk.
Where Molecular Testing Contributes
Overlapping symptoms can make infections difficult to distinguish on clinical presentation alone. PCR and RT-PCR testing help identify specific pathogens, providing laboratory evidence to support epidemiological investigations and disease surveillance.
At #Tianlong, we offer nucleic acid detection reagents, extraction solutions, and real-time PCR systems across a range of infectious disease applications, supporting laboratories as testing needs evolve.
